The whole Department of Neurobiology and Genetics is deeply saddened about the unexpected death of Alois Hofbauer. Alois was active at the chair for many years and was an extremely valued colleague. Together with Erich Buchner, he discovered the Hofbauer-Buchner eye, an important circadian photoreceptor, in Drosophila. Among other things, he established an extensive monoclonal antibody bank against proteins from the fruit fly brain. Many of the antibodies such as 3C11 or nc82 are now used worldwide outside of the fly, and later led to the identification of important synaptic proteins such as Bruchpilot in the Buchner research group. We will keep fond memories of Alois; our condolences go to his family. His work will outlast him.
