Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are known for their annual migrations over several thousand kilometers from the northern USA to the cloud forests in the mountain ranges of central Mexico. This natural phenomenon makes these butterflies a well-suited model organism for long-distance migrations in insects. The monarchs predominantly use sky-compass cues to keep their heading during their migration. However, visual information is not the only modality for orientation and cues such as idiothetic self-motion and olfaction are also relevant. This multi-modal information must be integrated and processed in the brain to code for orientation decisions.

My interest is focused on this integration of multimodal information in the brain and how orientation decisions are made based on these signals. I want to investigate these processes through multi-electrode recordings in the brain of monarch butterflies while presenting them with visual cues as well as cues of different modalities.
