Insects are able to perform impressive visual tasks like flight control, pattern and colour learning or navigation via visual landmarks. The necessary visual acuity to perform such tasks can not only be explained by the optical adaptations of their eyes. Hence, other mechanisms like neural spatial summation might play an important role to enhance their reliability of vision.

In my research I aim to unravel the underlying neural function of spatial processing. As the lamina is the ideal candidate for spatial integration, I use physiological, anatomical and computational approaches to characterize such spatial channels in the hawkmoth (Macroglossum stellatarum). All in all, I want to gain a deeper understanding of the insect visual system.
