  Egg parasitoids are able to find their hosts by exploiting their chemical footprints as host location cues. In nature, the apolar epicuticular wax layer of plants that consists of several classes of hydrocarbons serves as the substrate that retains these contact kairomones. However, experiments on chemical footprints generally have used filter paper as substrate to study insect behavior. Here, we explored the ability of Trissolcus basalis (Scelionidae) females to discriminate between footprint cues left by male and female Nezara viridula (Pentatomidae) on leaves of their host plant Brassica oleracea (broccoli). Furthermore, we analyzed the chemical composition of the outermost wax layer of broccoli leaves to evaluate the degree of overlap in insect and plant cuticular hydrocarbons that could lead to masking effects in the detection of footprint cues. Our results showed that B. oleracea epicuticular wax retains the chemical footprints of adult bugs and allows T. basalis females to differentiate hosts of different sex. Traces of female bugs elicited more extensive searching behavior in egg parasitoids than traces of males. The application of n-nonadecane, a compound specific to male N. viridula, on the tarsi of female bugs prevented parasitoid females from distinguishing between host male and host female footprints. Analyses of B. oleracea leaves revealed that epicuticular waxes were mainly composed of linear alkanes, ketones, and secondary alcohols. Alkanes were dominated by n-nonacosane (nC29) and n-hentriacontane (nC31), while male-specific n-nonadecane (nC19) was absent. The ecological significance of these results for parasitoid host location behavior is discussed.

  Plant surface characteristics were repeatedly shown to play a pivotal role in plant–pathogen interactions. The abaxial leaf surface of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is extremely glossy and wettable compared to the glaucous and more hydrophobic adaxial surface. Earlier investigations have demonstrated that the abaxial leaf surface was rarely infected by powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis), even when the adaxial surface was densely colonized. This led to the assumption that components of the abaxial epicuticular leaf wax might contribute to the observed impairment of growth and development of B. graminis conidia on abaxial surfaces of L. perenne. To re-assess this hypothesis, we analyzed abundance and chemical composition of L. perenne ab- and adaxial epicuticular wax fractions. While the adaxial epicuticular waxes were dominated by primary alcohols and esters, the abaxial fraction was mainly composed of n-alkanes and aldehydes. However, the major germination and differentiation inducing compound, the C26-aldehyde n-hexacosanal, was not present in the abaxial epicuticular waxes. Spiking of isolated abaxial epicuticular Lolium waxes with synthetically produced n-hexacosanal allowed reconstituting germination and differentiation rates of B. graminis in an in vitro germination assay using wax-coated glass slides. Hence, the absence of the C26-aldehyde from the abaxial surface in combination with a distinctly reduced surface hydrophobicity appears to be primarily responsible for the failure of normal germling development of B. graminis on the abaxial leaf surfaces of L. perenne.

The additional compounds were characterized as 3-β-methoxy lupane (lupane methyl ether), lupeol and the acetic acid esters of lupeol, skimmiwallinol, and isoskimmiwallinol, respectively. Minor, nonidentified compounds amounted to some 5% of total wax content and included triterpenoids, sterols, primary alcohols, and fatty acids. The variation detected for parents and progeny with respect to the wax components allowed quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses for their biosynthetic pathways. A total of 46 QTLs could be mapped onto the coconut linkage map which was extended by amplified fragment length polymorphism and single sequence repeat markers into a high density map with more than 1,000 mapped DNA markers. Several colocated QTLs for different traits were detected reflecting the observed correlations among characters.

A total of 46 QTLs could be mapped onto the coconut linkage map which was extended by amplified fragment length polymorphism and single sequence repeat markers into a high density map with more than 1,000 mapped DNA markers. Several colocated QTLs for different traits were detected reflecting the observed correlations among characters.

  Chemical surface characters play a decisive role in the interaction between plants and their environment. Maternal or paternal inheritance of wax characters in Rosa, section Caninae may allow for ecological niche differentiation according to the parental evolutionary constraints. If so, the radiation of hybrid offspring may reflect the parentally determined framework of interaction and selection against pathogens and abiotic stresses. We tested the inheritance of cuticular chemical wax parameters of reciprocal hybrids within Rosa, section Caninae, the dogroses. We not only found an extremely rich spectrum of chemical compounds on abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces of dogroses, but also a maternally skewed inheritance of some of these wax characters. The possible role of these findings for the evolution of the allopolyploid dogrose complex is discussed.
