Munich: studies (1881–1885), doctorate (1885), habilitation (1887), assistant professor (1891–1893)

After graduating from high school with distinction, Boveri goes to Munich in 1881 on a scholarship from the renowned Maximilianeum Foundation. Initially enrolled in history and philosophy, he switches to anatomy and biology after one semester. In 1885 Boveri receives his doctorate in natural sciences „summa cum laude”, and in 1887 he gains habilitation in zoology and comparative anatomy. From 1886 Boveri conducts research at the Zoological Institute with Richard Hertwig. There he receives a position as assistant professor after the Lamont scholarship expires. Boveri is already so well-known that foreign guest scientists want to work with him. One of them is Edmund B. Wilson, who later becomes the leading cell biologist in the United States – the two begin a lifelong friendship.
