Evolutionary origin of synapses and neurons

Neurons, neural networks, and ultimately entire brains are crucial to animal biology and behaviour, but little is known about their evolutionary origins. Pawel Burkhardt explores the fascinating question of how neurons and synapses with their synaptic toolbox originally developed. In which organism did the first neuron appear and where did the first brain come from? In his lecture, he not only answers these questions, but also provides an insight into how cell colonies initially communicated with each other via Ca²⁺ channels and action potentials.
