Dr. Patrick Wurzel

I lead the Spatial Systems Biology group at the Chair for Computational and Theoretical Biology (CCTB) and I am affiliated with the Mildred Scheel Early Career Center Würzburg (MSNZ). I studied Bioinformatics at the Goethe University Frankfurt, where I completed my PhD with a focus on digital pathology.

I am fascinated by biological systems as highly organized functional units in which every cell, structure, and interaction carries biological meaning. My research aims to decode this meaning by investigating how spatial organization and cellular interplay give rise to tissue function in health and disease. To make these principles measurable, I combine spatial omics with graph-based modelling and machine learning.
