  • MSc/BSc in Floral Microbiome Ecology

    Microbial symbionts play a tremendous role in eukaryotic biology and can have major implications on their hosts fitness. In this project we like to address the ecological and functional role of microbes in the floral anthosphere.

  • BSc/MSc in R package Development for the FENNEC

    We recently developed the software tool "FENNEC" to bioinformatically integrate organismal trait data into ecological studies. We are now interested to implement an R package that is able to call our existing pipeline, to make it also available directly from within R.

  • MSc/BSc in Carnivorous Plant Microbiota

    Plant carnivory has evolved independently in different taxonomic plant clades. Our recent results suggest that there are also convergent patterns in microbial associations. We are currently conducting studies that include members of all carnivorous genera (within 13 plant families) to find convergent and derived patterns in microbiota and co-evolution of bacterial genomes dependent on plant taxonomy, trap types and biogeography. We are looking for a motivated student, interested mainly in next-generation sequence data analysis and microbial ecology, to test several hypotheses in the existing data.

  • MSc/BSc in Scaling of Extinctions

    Extinctions happen at multiple spatial scales and can be associated with population extirpations or species extinctions. We, however, still lack an understanding of how the number of extinctions scales with area, with most works dealing either with local extirpations or Global extinctions. Within this topic, the candidate will explore with already available mechanistic simulation models, how extinctions scale with area depending on the species traits, habitat configurations and disturbance types. This study will be done in collaboration with Dr. Petr Keil from the sDiv Leipzig.
