VSG surface coat dynamics

The VSG coat of trypanosomes is densely packed and yet highly dynamic. This enables both, efficient shielding of underlying proteins from immune recognition as well as VSG recycling, antibody clearance and coat exchange. Understanding these contradictory attributes is of key interest of our research. I apply super-resolution techniques to image cellular membrane structures with high resolution and use single-particle tracking of VSGs in living trypanosomes and defined artificial bilayers to understand the unique properties of the trypanosome VSG coat.
