FAQ ZEB-Cloud+Storage

Eine Sinnvolle Abgrenzung ist leider nicht möglich, es sollte nicht unbedingt jeder im Universitätsnetz an diese Informationen gelangen. Eine Begrenzung auf unser Subnetz würde den Zugang über VPN verwehren. Die Informationen werden aber auch in Labfolder zur Verfügung gestellt

Default is 200GB quota for your personal datas (outside of the groupfolder).
There is no quota for the groupfolder (example AG_Engstler-Cloud)
And there is no quota for the ZEB-Storage
Limit is the space of the storage (currently 200TB)

We have more than 100TB of Data, you cant store that at a personal computer. Using Cloud has some advantages - you can save files at your computer and it will automaticly sync it to the server.

Cloud: files you need for daily work, especially documents and very important files
ZEB: big files like microscopy data

Because the files are at the local computer. After changing a file, it will upload to the server and then all other users will get this file.
It is a necessary security feature, otherwise it would overwrite data of other persons.

Partially correct (related to ZEB-Cloud). You could select data for synchronising. But precisely for this reason we have the ZEB-Storage

Im Prinzip kann jeder Filebrowser benutzt werden, der sshfs unterstützt. Filezilla ist nur ein Vorschlag, weil dieser frei für alle Systeme verfügbar ist, gut funktioniert, kostenfrei ist und viele Funktionen bietet.

Die Cloud bietet ein noch höheres Sicherheits-/Verfügbarkeitslevel. Beispiel: sollte man kein Internet zur Verfügung haben, das Netzwerk/Server ausfallen oder wegen Wartungsarbeiten nicht erreichbar sein, kann man mit der Cloud weiter arbeiten, mit dem Storage nicht.

Ja, die Daten werden lokal gespeichert und können durchsucht werden

Gültig ist immer diejenige, die erfolgreich auf dem Server hochgeladen wurde. Sollte eine andere Person (Person-B) versuchen eine geänderte Datei hochzuladen, welche von Person (Person-A) vor ihm geändert und hochgeladen wurde, dann erhält Person-B einen Konflikt und seine Datei wird lokal bei ihm unter einem andren Namen gespeichert. Person-B muss dann diesen Konflikt lösen.  

Wir haben über 100TB an Daten, keiner kann und will diese Menge an Daten auf seinen Computer synchronisieren. Zudem würde diese Fülle an Daten die Performance der Cloud extrem mindern.

You can use any other filebrowser which supports sshfs. There is also a software for mounting sshfs but this costs a fee  

Komplette Frage:

Wenn ich kein Internet habe, kann ich ohnehin kaum arbeiten. Die Daten, die ich lokal ohne Internet bearbeiten könnte, wären zB Mikroskopie Daten. Diese sind viel zu groß um sie in die Cloud zu packen. Es gibt Software mit der man den storage als Ordner einhängen kann. Somit speichert man alles direkt auf dem Storage (basically mach ich das seit Anfang an so). Ich hab quasi nichts lokal auf meinem PC, sondern alles immer im storage. Ich finde es sehr umständlich verschiedene Software zu nutzen, wenn ich mit einer Software "beides" machen kann.

Für Windows gibt kostenfreie Software zum direkten Einbinden - Info/Anleitung dazu bei den Tutorials. Alternativ gibt eine kostenpfichtige Software die für Windows+Mac funktioniert - Mountain Duck

When I work on matlab functions It Is very important to always have the recent version on the server. Its a problem for me, that I can’t directly connect matlab to the server/give it a path that directs there. But I would not like to keep downloading the whole function data every time. How would I do that most efficiently?

Answer:

I will check if we can run matlab at the ZEB-Terminalserver. Otherwise there is a software for mounting sshfs but this costs a fee

We can run all software which works with linux (and has a license agreement) at our ZEB-Terminalserver
